BA-MA-004 Seraphine

Artifact Description

A mourning adornment fashioned in the form of a skull pendant, one half left in quiet simplicity and the other enriched with pearls, crystal, and jeweled ornament. Though sharing its general form with other recorded mourning pieces, Seraphine is distinguished by an uncommon restraint in its composition, preserving a measured balance between remembrance and adornment. Entered into the Ledger as an object whose decoration neither conceals nor diminishes the symbol it accompanies.

Provenance

The precise origin remains unconfirmed. Its present construction suggests careful modern workmanship, while its proportions and ornament recall mourning pieces whose aesthetic belongs to an earlier century. No authenticated example has arrived with documentation sufficient to establish a continuous history, and the Archive has found no cause to favor one account above another.

As with many objects of uncertain inheritance, the absence of certainty has itself become part of the record.

Observations

Recorded examples exhibit modest variation in the arrangement of pearls and crystal while preserving the defining character by which Seraphine is recognized. The jeweled surface consistently appears deliberate rather than decorative alone, lending the impression that each embellishment serves a place rather than merely occupying one.

Those who examine the artifact frequently describe an unexpected sense of stillness. The observation has been repeated often enough to merit entry, though no explanation has been proposed.

Preservation Note

Keep from damp and from all perfumed oils. When laid aside, allow the chain to rest freely and permit no weight to bear upon the jeweled setting. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth. Abrasive compounds and chemical cleaners should never be applied.
